1 WHO iS OPAL17?

opal “oooo1700” 17 is/am something of a music producer popstar noisemaker from helsinki, finland

2 HOW HAS YOUR EXPERiENCE WITH COLLABORATiON BEEN?

Collaboration in music has been a long term challenge for me…

In theory I’m excited about doing cool stuff with cool people with cool ideas but oftentimes it can be a hard time to figure out how to work together if there’s no initial plan of who does what.

And then there’s scheduling difficulties and all that. But after all that, when I’ve managed to get started and inspired with a collab with someone it’s also more motivating to finish the projects because it’s not just my own musty thing but something with fresh perspectives & sounds from outside my brain <3

TL;DR it’s hard but i’m learning because it’s sooooo fruitful :)

3 WHAT WORK ARE U MOST PROUD OF?

It changes all the time, I keep finding stuff from my old releases or even unreleased stuff that I’m blown away by haha!

But to name out something here I’m really hyped for a waltz arrangement I did of Silver Cross by Charli XCX, with vocals from my friend.

I’m probably gonna release it in July on my soundcloud, stay tuned :P

4 WHAT GEAR/SOFTWARE DO U USE?

FL Studio 11 babyyyyy!! Mostly stock plugins too, Harmor is the top 1, but some VSTs I frequent are Vital and Valhalla Supermassive.

Can’t pirate gear so I’m quite minimal in that department, just an Arturia minilab & Shure SM58.

5 WHAT DOES UR PROCESS LOOK LiKE?

If I have an inspiring idea it’s like this: open FL -> frenzy -> there is a song. Or at least most of a song.

If I don’t have an inspiring idea I might just browse through my projects and listen through them and if I have something to add or tweak.

Ok, to be more specific, I’m somewhat sound design centric, so If I do have an idea that I’m starting from scratch, It usually starts with doing the sounds that I have in my head on Harmor first, then layering more harmors on top of it, finding interesting parameters to tweak and then automating those to create progression.

6 WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR OPAL17?

I wanna make a techno album tbh. And produce pop music for pop vocalists. And try to perform more in some degree.

7 ANY PARTiNG THOUGHTS?

partying thoughts??? always!!!

auhm
i want symmetry so im gonna grab the question from susiez interview
8 WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LiKE iN YOUR COLLABORATiON WiTH KEDAMONO DREAMS?

Susie approached me and asked if I'd be interested in doing a cover of Warm Blood by Carly Rae Jepsen, with mostly a vibe in mind. I started producing the initial instrumental, then they provided vocals for that, then I build the arrangement further with the vocals mixed in. I sent a bunch of WIP versions to Susie & they responded with feedback & input to the arrangement and processing. Fun & organic!!
